A gorgeous antique French slipware terracotta water jug from the Saône region of eastern France, handmade back in the late half of the 19th century. This pottery jug, also known as a gargoulette, orjol or cruche, has an unglazed interior and carrying handle, so was most likely used for carrying water in the summer months, with the thick earthenware helping to keep it fresh and the unglazed bottom allowing for cooling evaporation. Similar in style to the more common Provence jugs with their bright yellow or green glaze, each of these glorious pitchers is unique, with its own pattern of slipware lines, curls and swirls. Condition is good, with the knocks and chips you'd want from a household item of this age. Measures approx 37cm (14 1/2") high to top of handle by 27cm (10 1/2") width from tip of spout to tip of handle. Weighs 3.5kg (7lb 15oz).
